Program notes

I was inspired by Heidegger’s philosophy, especially the concept of “thrownness.” Geworfenheit is a German philosophical term often translated as "thrownness" in English. It originates from the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger, specifically from his seminal work Being and Time (Sein und Zeit). The term refers to the idea that human beings find themselves "thrown" into existence without choice. This thrownness highlights the fact that individuals are born into a world, a specific historical moment, a particular culture, and circumstances they did not choose, and they must navigate life within those constraints. Geworfenheit emphasizes the contingent and unpredictable nature of human existence, as well as the lack of control over many of the fundamental conditions that shape one's life. It underscores the existential tension between freedom and the given conditions of life. Tragedies are unfolding across the world, in places such as Gaza, Myanmar, North Korea, and Syria. Furthermore, as we can gather from the acceptance speech of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates, the Japanese Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, there is a growing desensitization towards the dangers of nuclear weapons in our society. The remarks of politicians about using nuclear weapons or pursuing nuclear armament no longer provoke the same sense of urgency they once did.

As a composer, my music is a reflection of myself. Some may argue that humans are born perfect, but when we look at reality, it is clear that people are born as truly imperfect beings who go on to create countless mistakes and, at times, even tragedies.

While I may not be able to change the world in dramatic ways, I hope that the music I write, and the world I live in, will one day move beyond reflecting human imperfection and instead celebrate hope.
