Individuality, Collaboration, and Clarity
I tailor instruction to each student's artistic voice, emphasize community-driven learning, and prioritize efficient notation and communication for effective music-making.
Teaching Philosophy
My approach to teaching music composition is grounded in three fundamental principles: individuality, community-driven learning, and efficiency. Recognizing the inherently subjective and diverse nature of music, I guide students to explore their relationships with their communities and environments, fostering their artistic growth.
Individuality: I tailor each lesson to the student's unique musical background, interests, and artistic voice. Whether their focus is on avant-garde composition, jazz, bossa nova, or popular music, my pedagogical approach ensures that their creative expression is nurtured within their chosen stylistic framework.
Community-Driven Learning: I emphasize the importance of collaboration with performers, conductors, stage directors, administrators, and scholars. By encouraging students to engage with the societal and environmental contexts that shape artistic aesthetics, I help them develop a broader perspective on their role as composers.
Efficiency: Effective time management and clear communication are essential skills for any musician. I teach students to notate their ideas with precision, minimizing rehearsal time spent on deciphering notation so that performers can focus on interpretation and musicality.
