Program notes
"Down the Rabbit Hole" is the first scene from Alice in Wonderland. I was deeply inspired not only by Lewis Carroll’s literature but also by various artistic interpretations of it—ranging from visual art and fashion to fine dining, opera, and film.
The composition is divided into two distinct parts, which contrast sharply in terms of timbre, register, regularity, gesture, harmony, and aesthetics. As a composer, I aimed to blend and merge the sounds from both realms in my own musical language, questioning the binary world that divides into:
Reality vs. Imagination
Realism vs. Surrealism
Regularity vs. Irregularity
High vs. Low
I began by sketching the formal structure and gradually refining each element. The piece starts in the highest register with a fragile, delicate sonic fabric, which eventually morphs into deep, engulfing textures in the lowest register.
The rabbit hole also carries a double meaning. Beyond its literal reference to Alice in Wonderland, it symbolizes a descent into a complex, bizarre, or challenging state. I sought to express this by establishing strong pitch centricity around C, which gradually dissolves as the music descends—mirroring the sensation of falling deeper into the unknown. This effect becomes particularly evident toward the ending, as descending gestures reinforce the feeling of losing stability.
Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Felipe Lara, who not only supported me with his compositional expertise but also generously provided his office space, allowing me to focus on writing. I am also sincerely grateful to Maestro Juliano Ancieto and the members of the Old Bay New Music Ensemble for this incredible opportunity.
