Program notes

This piece is dedicated to the victims who are still suffering from the loss caused by one of the biggest natural disasters in human history, which occurred in March 2011 in Japan. I drew inspiration for the piece from the sounds of saxophones, which reminded me of the tsunami, wind, and raindrops. After seeing the picture attached on the next page, I was deeply moved to tears and felt compelled to compose this piece.

This piece reflects how fragile humanity is in the face of a tsunami and the immense power of nature. It begins with airy sounds, evoking the peacefulness of a quiet town in Japan, unaware of the impending disaster. Just as natural disasters strike unpredictably, the earthquake and tsunami suddenly occur. The arpeggios symbolize the rising waves, growing higher and more intense as time progresses. Throughout the piece, there are hidden references to the numbers 3 and 11 as a tribute to the disaster's date.

The middle section features an unmeasured passage, culminating in a baritone saxophone solo. This section represents the girl in the picture who lost everything, capturing how the disaster profoundly affected individual lives. Through improvisatory elements, I want each performer to convey this sense of loss in their own way, just as trauma impacts individuals differently.

In the end, the piece returns to silence, as if nothing had ever happened.

Through this composition, I sincerely hope that the victims will be remembered and remain in our hearts.
